The Legacy Of The Philippines - 1359 Words

The Philippines is one of many third world countries, and my family had fled this poverty ridden nation to start anew in the United States. My family, on my mother’s side, began to emigrate here to the U.S. from the Philippines in the 1980s, during Ronald Reagan’s presidency. My aunt and uncle immigrated in the year 1980 on for my grandfather’s funeral, while my grandmother was petitioned and came in 1985, but my mother did not come to the U.S. until the year 1992. The Philippine government is extremely corrupt, and been overrun and ruled by the dictatorship of the Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos for 15 years. My family had left the Philippines in hopes of improving their livelihood and experiences the opportunities that America could offer, such as better education, work, and wages. However, my family had entered the U.S. nearly penniless and had to strive earnestly to achieve a proper living. Unfortunately, they had also entered the U.S. during Ronald Rea gan’s presidency and his economic policies of â€Å"Reaganomics† which was meant to reinvigorate the American economy. Disastrously, â€Å"Reaganomics† only exacerbated the American economy and was a total failure. â€Å"Reaganomics† gave more money and power to the already wealthy through supply-side economics, trickle-down economics, and deregulation while completely ignoring the poor such as my own family who suffered great hardships. Poverty Phillipines vs Canada Essay - 1062 Words

I have conducted extensive research on the needs of the country in question. Throughout the course of my research it has become clear that there can be many trends in the data and statistics of economic concerns of many countries. In order to better illustrate my point I have chosen to compare two different countries while observing one economic concern. I have decided to illustrate the concern of poverty in the economy of the Philippines and Canada. The Philippines is a country that has been destroyed by widespread poverty. The economic concerns in this country have multiplied in the past decade. There are many causes to the many problems and not enough effective reforms to rectify them. They currently have a population of†¦show more content†¦The high crime and drug rates, the low education rates, the lack of knowledge of technological advancement, and the poor living conditions also play a large role in the high poverty level. A lot has been done to benefit the situation in the Philippines; however, few changes have actually been made. Industry is highly monopolized. Mismanagement caused the land to be unequally distributed. Reforms that were made had little progress. Income was highly monopolized as well. The 10% of the rich population got richer. There was a small attempt to redistribute the money, but the only people who seemed to benefit from this were the middle class. President Aquino made an effort to destroy the monopolies, boost the economy, and create more jobs for the lower class. She was only able to bust down the state protected monopolies and because her efforts failed, poverty continued to weigh heavily on the Philippines. Table 1 shows the slow rate in which the poverty level has improved in the past years. This can mainly be blamed

The Church - Part 1 - 1184 Words

The Church – Part 1 People of long ago have attended church and it’s been known and shown from centuries to centuries on how families have attended this church or that church, this denomination or that denomination to no denomination. This family or that family, this race or that race and lately the key point in the matter of going to church seems to be missing. It has been just a religious ritual to some for far too long and going to church just because our parents went or because it’s Sunday; maybe we are told to go, or perhaps we want to be seen sitting on a pew is still missing the mark of true church attendance. The main focus of going to church should be to worship God and our worship must be genuine for God. God is a spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth. Now, how can anyone worship God in spirit and in truth; while attending church with their mind on what someone may be wearing or with their mind on the ball game that may be playing on the TV, or what’s cooking in the oven while wishing the entire time that church service would hurry up and end? We must check our motive of us being in church. If we are there in church to see who’s there at church or perhaps, if we are there only to be seen in church; then our reason for attending church is meaningless. God deserves true worship from us and he will know if our worship for him is real because he knows all and he sees all. Therefore, we can’t fool him about anything that we doShow MoreRelatedThe Doctrine Of The Church777 Words   |  4 PagesThe doctrine of the church is of utmost importance today. Maintenance management is one of the most important tasks of the employees in the facility department, as in a telecom organization the devices that are used to maintain a continuous high speed network must be maintained with high priority. Standards: The facility manager has to ensure that the company liabilities should not exceed the profitable amount of the organization and along with that facility department should make sure the consistency for the space layouts, fit up, furniture and capital projects (Shohet Lavy, 2017). Upgrading works For the growth of any organization or to ensure the productivity and profitability of an organization the importance of facility management cannot be denied. In this scenario, it can be said that behind the success of SingTel, there are enormous contribution of the facility department. In todays market, SingTel has earned a name and the directors of the organization during a press meet stated that without the strong support from the facility department of the organization, the corporation would not have achieved the success they have acquired now. The facility department is mission critical for SingTel and the challenges the facility managers have to face are numerous. The facility manager of SingTel has to ensure that while operation lowest energy is consumed, they have to ensure increased lease revenues along with that the facility management will have to ensure that there is a decrease in work order response times (Allen et al., 2017). The facility department should do the budgeting work and financial planning before initiation of a project. The facility department also has to understand the health and safety issues of the employees of the organization in order to keep the environment of the workplace safer (Shohet Lavy, 2017). The facility department ensures that all the employees are content with their stay in the workplace and when in emergency the employees of the facility department has to be present their physically to solve the issues. The facility department has to understand the business process of SingTel, so that they can provide the best facilities to the employees of SingTel, so that they can emerge as the best organization as per the productivity along with the profitability. The employees of the facility department should have a clear idea about the mission and objective of SingTel in order to ensure that for the both parties the goals are matched. For a business organization like SingTel, every financial year does not go equally and at the time of emergencies, the facility department has to act as quickly as they can to ensure that the organization operates smoothly (Shohet Lavy, 2017). In most cases within the premise of the Singtel, the employees of the facility department have to have a basic idea regarding technologies and latest software. As the operations of SingTel are totally technology based, thus to ensure that the employees are getting enough technological assistance the employees of the facility department should have a basic knowledge of latest technologies. The facility department should make sure that all the devices that are used to maintain continuous network throughout the nation are maintained well and those are in the probably best hands. Thus, it can be said that the facility department have some extra roles to play while working for an organization like SingTel. The facility employees of SingTel are rich with their intrapersonal skills and thus they can have the ability to connect with all the employees of the organization and have the ability to encourage them to work harder if needed. Recommendation Figure: Model of facility management (Optimagrupo.es, 2017) Considering the model of facility management, the management of the organization should improve the facility management in order to keep the facility department effective. The facility department of SingTel is highly competent and it can surely be said that behind the success of SingTel, the contribution of the facility department is enormous. Somehow, it can be said that there are some places where the facility department can improve and that will surely boost the productivity along with the profitability of the organization (Mahoney, 2014). The employees of the facility department of SingTel can improve their intrapersonal skills, so that they can establish better communication with all the employees of the corporation (Atkin Brooks, 2014). If a good communication among the workforce is established, then it can surely be said that there will be a significant increase in the productivity of the organization and an overall understanding among the employees will get better over time. If the management can focus more on the training and development procedure for the facility employees, then this type of shortcoming can easily be rectified. The employees of the facility department can improve their reaction time at the time of emergencies. If they can at quickly when needed, they will be able to solve the issues faster than before and that can directly have a positive impact on the productivity of the organization. For this a thorough training session must be conducted by the management of SingTel for the facility employees (Lin, Su Chen, 2014). The facility department can enhance their technological skills so that they can solve the technical issues faster than before (Atkin Brooks, 2014). As the business operation of SingTel is mostly dependent on the electronic and electrical devices, to ensure that the network is provided without a hitch, the facility employees should have sound knowledge regarding the latest technologies. Considering this model management of SingTel should consider that they must invest some time for training the facility employees about the work safety management for the betterment of the company. Better knowledge of work safety can surely enhance the level of confidence of the workers towards the organization (Lin, Su Chen, 2014). If the general workforce notices that the management of the organization is doing something for them, then it will increase their level of motivation and loyalty towards the organization. It is a matter of fact that a motivated workforce is a nucleus of any organization, but it can surely be said that a motivated and loyal workforce is certainly an asset for the organization. Evaluation From the real life data collection an noticing the success graph of the organization of the last few years it can surely be said that due to massive improvement in the facility management in the SingTel has resulted in a boost in the productivity and the profitability of the organization. The CEO of SingTel during a press meet has shown his utmost respect for the facility employees of the organization, saying that they always remain behind the curtain and in most of the times do not get enough recognition (Lavy Jawadekar, 2014). But the facility employees are the ones who ensure that the operations of the organization run smoothly and the service that the customers get are uninterrupted (Allen et al., 2017). A data was collected almost a year ago regarding the productivity and the profitability of the organization and then various steps to improve the facility system were taken by the management. After implementing those regulations data were again collected. The management was happ y to see that the organization got positively influenced by the improvement of the facility department. The competency level of the facility employees were tested by the management by simulating real life situations within the workplace and the core management of the organization was happy to see that after providing training to the facility employees, they successfully completed the tasks in that simulated situation and proved their competency level (Atkin Brooks, 2014). Recommendation and Contingency Plan The management of the organization can take some initiatives to make the facility management of the organization more effective. The fields where the management wants to work on for the employees of the facility department are mentioned in this sector (Lavy Jawadekar, 2014). The following recommendations will also contribute in the contingency plan of the facility management. Cultural training The management has already given training regarding improving the intrapersonal relationships, but lack of proper cultural intelligence the employees would not be able to give in their full potential. In an organization like SingTel, there are employees from various ethnic and cultural backgrounds (Allen et al., 2017). The issue that the employees of the facility department face nowadays is that they cannot communicate with the individuals in the workforce, who are from different cultural background. Thus the management of the organization should focus on training the facility employees along with all the employees of the organization to enhance their cultural intelligence so that a proper communication is established within the employees of the organization. Equipments The management of the organization must make sure that they provide the facility employees with the best possible equipments that can improve their work rate. The facility department is engaged in such works where they will need better equipments in order to ensure a continuous productivity of the organization (Lavy Jawadekar, 2014). Recruiting talented workforce The management of the organization should ensure that they recruit the best possible talented people for their facility department to ensure a great contribution of facility department towards the productivity and the profitability of the organization. The hiring process can be changed according to the present needs of the organization (Lavy Jawadekar, 2014). If the management wants competent employees who will mostly look after the equipments maintenance the recruitment type would be different and if they want their facility department will be strong dealing with the work safety issues the recruitment criteria would be different. Thus for SingTel it would be wiser if the organization recruits individuals for the facility department in a balanced nature. Conclusion Thus to conclude, it can be said that the organization like SingTel, they should focus more on strengthening the facility department in order to ensure a sound productivity and profitability. The management of the organization thus has already taken some initiatives and can work on the issues more for the betterment of the situation. In short it can be said that facility management is one of the most important department of an organization that can ensure the reputation of that particular corporation. References Allen, E. How to choose a business-writing training provider - Emphasis

How to choose a business-writing training provider How to choose a business-writing training provider Writing skills is a subject that many trainers claim to be able to provide. Heres our guide to sorting the wheat from the chaff. Writing analysis Its important always to build on what trainees know already. So a good provider should start by assessing documents that delegates have written and do so preferably in advance of the training course. (At Emphasis, we start by assessing 14 aspects of each delegates writing, producing a graph to show which skills they should concentrate on.) Its also useful if they can do the same after training, to assess the effectiveness of the training and pick up on any outstanding learning needs. Specialist trainers The fact that English is usually the first language of trainees does not mean that any English-speaking trainer can train them to use it effectively. Many trainers claim to be able to deliver writing-skills training. But you need to make sure that they have specialist skills in this area apart from experience of running training courses on the subject. To state the obvious: English may be our native language, but its still a language. So it demands specialist skills. After all, you wouldnt want to learn Spanish from a trainer whose only qualification is that they read a book on it last week. Flexible, solutions-based approach The objective of all training should be to give trainees the skills they need to work more effectively. It should not be simply to run a training course. Make sure, therefore, that the providers you choose can be flexible in their approach. They should be able to use a range of training techniques (eg. group-based training; one-to-one, on-site coaching; telephone coaching), so that they can adopt the methods most suited to the trainees needs and circumstances. Bespoke training Training needs to be authentic to work, as trainees need to be able to apply the techniques they learn to their jobs straight away, without having to translate it. So make sure that the provider you choose has the resources to provide bespoke training courses. Follow-up support The true test of training comes when trainees get back to their desks and have to plough through the 30 emails that have piled up while they were on the course. New techniques are easily dislodged by day-to-day workloads, and its all-too easy to slip back into bad habits. So ask what back-up the trainer can provide such as telephone/email support or regular reminders of key messages. Written Assignment Term Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Written Assignment - Term Paper Example In classifying risk, one considers such as aspects of who should be released in pretrial, who to release under tight supervision in the community, who to release on parole and or under supervision release. Clinical assessment or actuarial tests are basic tools that assist in such risk classifications. For the clinical assessment, informal as well as non-observable tactics of determining the risk posed by a person to the community are employed while the actuarial approach undertakes thorough research in the determination. The actuarial approach involves research methodologies in being empirical or theoretical in determination of relation to recidivism. On the need principle, the main concern determined is what should be the main targets of human service aspects in rehabilitation programs. Interventions form what is called criminogenic needs and they are said to be deficits that relate to likelihood/propensity of an individual to commit crime. They are seen to be changed through programs of rehabilitation. The principle therefore addresses such attributes as pro-criminal attitudes, associates, weak socialization, impulsivity, low verbal intelligence (below average), risk taking, early antisocial behavior exhibit, low capacity to solve problems, poor parenting as well as educational deficits among others. Despite these factors being targeted in rehabilitation for their association with criminal activities, others are by no means related to crime (Jacobs, Davidson, Steiner & Hoge, 2002). Examples to these are self-esteem as well as self-control as they show weak relation to recidivism. It is understood that even offenders in some ins tances they exhibit high esteem and therefore rehabilitation would not be effective in targeting esteem. Another distinct feature of need principle is that the needs can be classified as static and or

Health Discrimination in Hong Kong Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Health Discrimination in Hong Kong - Essay Example Body In order to fix the health inequities which relate to gender in Hong Kong, possible health care priorities in health policies must include HIV/AIDS screening and treatment opportunities open to all citizens regardless of gender or sexual orientation. Another health priority would be the improved access to women seeking maternal and child care before, during, and after their pregnancy. Gender inequities can sometimes be apparent in relation to access of healthcare programs for women sex workers and for homosexuals (Abdullah, et.al., 2000). These gender inequities must be set aside especially as far as AIDS screening and treatment is concerned. Instead, reforms must include the establishment of mandatory annual screening for STDs and AIDS among sex workers (Wong, 2003). This access must be made available to male, female, including homosexual sex workers and anyone seeking access to these same health services. No discrimination in terms of gender must be made before such services c an be accessed. This mandatory screening would help manage the AIDS problem in Hong Kong, and ensure that the numbers of AIDS sufferers would decrease. Health reforms should also target the prioritization of services for health workers in relation to AIDS. AIDS has become one of the rapidly growing health issues in the world; it is also one of the most preventable diseases, especially with proper health education and the application of other preventative remedies, like mandatory annuals AIDS and STD screening (Wong, et.al., 2006). Access of sex workers to health services is often hampered by their limited financial resources; moreover, the health system does not make these screenings available to all sex workers due to their limited resources. In effect, future health policies must prioritize the allocation of funds for these mandatory annual screenings for high-risk women and other sex workers (Wong, et.al., 2006). Considerations of income or gender must not be made a basis for who the recipients of these screening services. Inequities in this regard must be neutralized. Future health policies on addressing the gender disparities in health must also include the establishment of outreach clinics for sex workers (Wong, 2003). These specialist centers would help ensure that female sex workers would be able to gain access to essential services based on their convenience. The clinics would be open at hours convenient to them and it would also reduce the stigma from the rest of society (Wong, 2003). In other words, health reform also means accepting the fact that some females work in the sex industry, and the fact that these activities are basically against the law should not be their basis for gaining access to essential health services (Wong, 2003). Female sex workers are fully aware of the fact that there is a stigma against them from the general population; for which reason, they also prefer not to access health services from the main hospitals for fear of bein g stigmatized. Moreover, society, including hospitals can indeed discriminate against them in terms of equal access to health services (Wong, et.al., 2006). Future reforms in health care must therefore include a more specific program which would

Dracula Essay Example for Free

Dracula Essay Good vs. Evil has long been expressed through movies and books throughout history. Batman beating the Joker, Spiderman banishing the Green Goblin, and Arthur and the guys defeating Dracula are all examples of literature based on the theme Good vs. Evil. In Bram Stokers, Dracula, Jonathan Harker represents the good, while the vampire, Dracula, represents the evil antagonist. One thing these four pieces share is that evil never fully overcomes good. They all start off as regular human beings, or on the good side, until their spirit and soul becomes taken over by a sense of evil. Gothic elements, such as, an atmosphere of mystery and suspense, supernatural events, gloom and horror, the tyrannical male, and the woman in distress are all present in these stories. The movie Interview with a Vampire, The Singing Springing Lark, and the story Interview with a Vampire can relate to Dracula because of their themes and gothic elements. The movie Interview with a Vampire is very similar to the story Dracula. It starts off in a dark night scene filled with dull and heavy music. Also, during the fight scene, the setting included thunderstorms and pouring rain. This shows metonymy because the dark and heavy music represents death and terror and the thunderstorms and rain were used to create a setting of darkness and fear. Other gothic elements shown in this movie were Lucy’s pale skin, the castle setting, and the exchanging of blood. In the Lindauer 2 story Dracula, Lucy’s skin starts to become very pale because she has been bitten by Dracula, which is what happened in the movie. This represents the gothic element tyrannical male, because of Dracula’s presentation of overpowering the other characters, more specifically Mina and Lucy. This directly relates to the gothic element women in distress because the women in both stories were treated poorly and were taken advantage of due to their weaknesses. In the story, The Singing Springing Lark, there are also many similarities to Dracula. For example, as in Interview with a Vampire also, most of the scenes take place in a castle. This shows the gothic element setting in a castle. As in most stories, a castle usually represents evil spirits and terror, which Dracula and the Beast both represent. Another gothic element shown is an atmosphere of mystery and suspense. In the story, the prince was hesitant to meet the girl’s family because â€Å"for if a ray from a burning light were to fall on him there, he would be transformed into a dove, and would have to fly with doves for seven years.† This is an important quote because in the story Dracula, the boys had figured out that Dracula’s evil spirit was weakest during the times of sunrise and sunset. If they didn’t get to him before the sun set, his powers were going to be restored. In other words, the change from dark to light represents a change from evil to good. In the story Interview with a Vampire, the plot line is almost exactly the same. For example, â€Å"The mere sight of a bared throat could bring about in me such a taste of arousal that I became like an animal, incapable of language or restraint.† This quote shows tyrannical male because it compares how Armand and Dracula are both similar in the way they kill their prey. They both attack where the blood is rich just like animals do and dominate their prey. It also Lindauer 3 shows a sexual side because the mere fact of killing got both of these characters aroused. For example, â€Å"With his left hand he held both Mrs. Harkers hands, keeping them away with her arms at full tension; his right hand gripped her by the back of the neck, forcing her face down on his bosom. Her white nightdress was smeared with blood, and a thin stream trickled down the mans bare breast which was shown by his torn-open dress.†(Stoker 283) This quote shows women in distress because it describes how Mina, in a sense, was raped. Just Armand, Dracula finds pleasure in killing, and transforming good into evil. One thing that all of these pieces share is that evil never overcomes good. Although evil makes its presence known and dominates at first, good prevails in the end. The movie Interview with a Vampire, The Singing Springing Lark, and the story Interview with a Vampire can relate to Dracula because of their themes and gothic elements. As Theodore Roosevelts once said, The forces that tend for evil are great and terrible, but the forces of truth and love and courage and honesty and generosity and sympathy are stronger than any before.

Hurtful Love and Foolish Hope in Death of a Salesman Essay -- Death S

Hurtful Love and Foolish Hope in Death of a Salesman A father is an important role model in a young man's life; perhaps the most important. A father must guide his children, support them, teach them, and most importantly, love them. In the play Death of a Salesman, written by Arthur Miller, an aging salesman of 63, Willy Loman worked all his life for his children. Happy and especially Biff, his two sons, where his pride and joy and his reason for living. Willy tried as hard as he possibly could to provide for them, to support them, to mold them into men; but he failed. Willy's greatest fault, perhaps, was his inability to see his sons for what they really were. Biff and Happy were never destined to be great men, yet Willy always believed in them. Although Willy's hope is touching, it is also foolish. Willy Loman's blind faith in his son Biff's abilities destroyed Biff's sense of moderation and modesty. Despite Biff's obvious incompetence and mediocrity, Willy vehemently refused to accept his son's failure to "make the grade." Biff "stole himself out of every good job since high school!" (131), yet Willy cannot accept that his son is a "dime a dozen" and declares that Biff is merely failing to spite him. "I want you to know...where ever you go, that you cut down your life for spite!" (129). By blaming Biff for his problems, Willy clears himself of all guilt. Willy cannot realize that it was his ineptitude as a father that created Biff's character. If Willy was a little more aware of his son's situation, his true character, Biff may have realized sooner that he was not "a leader of men." When asked whose fault it is that he never accomplished anything, Biff answered "...I never got anywher... ...r looked up to was nothing more than a "fake", and Biff lost all reason to his life. Everything that Willy taught him was destroyed on that one night. Every rule, every piece of advice, was nulled by that one act of adultery. Willy Loman tried his best to be a good father. He encouraged his sons, he worked all his life for them, and he tried to help them in any way he could. The only problem was, although his heart was there, Willy just wasn't a good father. Willy did his best to raise his sons, but tragically, the more he tried, the worse they became. Ultimately, Willy failed as a father, but he did try his best. He loved his children, in some cases, too much. He loved them blindly, and never once questioned their greatness. Although love like that is touching, it also harmful. Willy's delusions of grandeur for his sons hurt them more than it helped them.

Cosi †What Does Lewis Durig the Direction of the Play Besides Money Essay

‘Cosi’ written by Louis Nowra is a play that, explores the themes of love and fidelity, illusion and Delusion and identity and madness all explored through the events of the main character Lewis and the mental patients he works with. Lewis initially directs the play ‘Cosi Fan Tutte’ for the money but finds himself gaining more than just money as the play concludes. Throughout the play Lewis is able to grow and learn as a person through the play. This includes Lewis gaining new views on love and fidelity, His growth in confidence throughout the play, all while he gains a new positive respect and view on the mentally ill. Initially in the play Lewis’s feelings and attitude towards the mentally ill are highly negative but as he begins to work with them through directing the play he begins to see them without his previous mindset. â€Å"just leave† he says to himself on context of directing the â€Å"nuts† However Lewis progresses he starts to see them as normal humans, this is confirmed when near the end Act 1 where Nick says â€Å"they’re nuts† and Lewis defends the patients. Initially Lewis believes that the patients are dangerous and if they forgot to take their medication they could â€Å"go berserk† however as the play progresses Lewis’ views are shown to change the more time he spends rehearsing with the patients. This indicates his change in character and his dedication to helping those that he once viewed very negatively. By the conclusion of the play it is evident that Lewis has gained knowledge and new outlooks in regards towards the mentally ill and through the directing of the play Lewis was able to break past the stereotypical opinions and realize â€Å"They are ordinary people who have done extraordinary things, thought extraordinary thoughts. † The most important of all themes shown through ‘Cosi’ is definitely Love and Fidelity. Lewis begins the play with really no opinion towards love and fidelity other than what he had heard from Lucy, but as the play continues and advances towards the conclusion of the play Lewis learns and forms is own opinion that love and fidelity is actually important in any day and age. When Lewis is first asked about fidelity by one of the patients he responds with â€Å"Love is not so important nowadays† this is shows that he doesn’t really seem to have too strong opinion on the matter, and that it is of very low importance as well as he is following social norm and mainly influenced by the opinion of Lucy that fidelity is old fashioned. However, through great amounts of work with the patients and exposure to their thoughts and views on fidelity creates great insight for Lewis. Lewis gradually gains a new perspective on fidelity, which is greatly influenced by Henry when he says â€Å"My mother only loved my father, no one else. He died in Korea and she loved no one else but him. † Showing that even during war times people still can find time for love and that it is not just â€Å"an emotional indulgence for the privileged few† this also inspires Lewis to end his relationship with Lucy when he states â€Å"without love the word wouldn’t mean much. † Lewis begins the play with a very shy and introvert personality, presenting that he is lacking self-confidence. These characteristics are straight away evident within the opening scene of the play, when the play describes Lewis as â€Å"fumbling in the darkness†. This is suggesting that Lewis is has no great strive to do things in life and lacks motivation. This is also extremely obvious to the reader when Lewis at the beginning of the play when he suggests â€Å"we could do the Exception and the Rule† but then is bullied by the other patients particurly Roy into changing the play the patients will perform to ‘Cosi Fan Tutte’, however as the play progresses the patients begin to get on Lewis’ nerves, teaching him to take control of situations gain confidence in himself not only to direct but to have his own. Nowra shows this in the very last line of the play where he states to himself â€Å"time to turn out the lights† and the theatre goes black.

South African Rule, The Aparthied, And Nelson Mandela

SOUTH AFRICAN CHANGE IN RULE, THE APARTHIED, AND NELSON MANDELA By the year 1910, Britain had granted South Africa self-rule and they were no longer under British law. This gave South Africa the opportunity to become its own nation developing its own laws and way of ruling. South Africa at the time was mostly African Americans with the small minority of people being white. During this time in the year 1918, a young black boy was born to a tribal leader named Gadla Mandela. This boy was named Rohihlahla Mandela. His first name means â€Å"troublemaker†. He would later be named Nelson by a primary school teacher he had. No one could have known what his life would become as the years went on. Young Nelson grew up in the village of Transkei where the people spoke the language called Xhosa. He was always a very intelligent kid with a good sense of self-government because he was being raised by a tribal leader and always around other older confident leader type men and ch iefs. Nelson quickly learned to stand up for what he believed in life and fight for what he felt was right. These values were what got him into trouble in later years. He would get into trouble disobeying the laws of even his own tribe by refusing things such as arranged marriage and other traditions of the tribe. Nelsons father died in the year 1930 and another tribe leader raised him. He was well educated and attended the University of South Africa, graduating in the year 1942. He
